This is What America Looks Like

As my daughter and I stood across the street from the line of people entering Chicago’s cancelled Trump rally, I said to her, “We’re standing at the crossroads of ideas. This is what the First Amendment is all about, and this is why I love our country…because we can do this.”

As chants continued from late afternoon to early evening, with people from all walks of life standing as a unified American body against a political ideology they disagree with, my thoughts unraveled with the gift our founding fathers gave us. The opportunity to disagree. The chance to exchange thoughts. The possibility to raise one’s voice in the public sphere. This is what our protected freedom is about, and what it allows.

Inside the UIC Pavilion, this exchange of ideas continued, as protestors sat amongst Trump supporters. Were there ugly words exchanged between some supporters of both views? Yes. This is expected when passionate opinions find themselves in close quarters.

Justice Holmes valued and encouraged the marketplace of ideas in the context of the First Amendment. Can it come at the expense of human dignity, safety and security? Of course it can. But in the end, Holmes trusted that after the exchange of ideas passed, human intelligence will recognized truth from falsehood and choose truth over falsehood.

Last night, the marketplace was burgeoning with life. The conversation is ablaze and American politics is catching fire with groups that might otherwise not care.  This is good.  This is what allows a society to thrive and grow.

To my country’s founding fathers: thank you for your wisdom and trust in the democratic process.

To my fellow countrymen: let’s think wisely to ensure that our freedoms remain fully in tact.
